SIZE GUIDE

Common roll-off dumpster sizes

Dumpster dimensions vary by provider. Yardage measures volume—not weight—so a large container is not automatically appropriate for dense debris. Use this guide as a starting point and confirm the actual dimensions and weight allowance in your quote.

SMALL CLEANUPS

10 Yard Dumpster

Often considered for small garage cleanouts, bathroom remodels, minor flooring removal, and compact jobsites. Dense materials may also require a small container because the truck must stay within legal weight limits.

SMALL–MEDIUM PROJECTS

15 Yard Dumpster

A flexible option for moderate cleanouts, small renovation projects, yard debris where accepted, and jobs that need more room than a compact 10-yard container.

LARGE PROJECTS

30–40 Yard Dumpster

Designed for major cleanouts, new construction, commercial work, bulky debris, and projects producing a high volume of lighter material. Confirm that the site has enough truck clearance.

VOLUME IS ONLY HALF THE DECISION

Weight can determine the right container

Concrete, dirt, brick, block, asphalt, plaster, and roofing shingles become extremely heavy before a container looks full. These materials may require a dedicated container, a lower fill level, or a smaller size.

Never fill above the container’s marked line or leave material extending over the top. An overloaded or unsafe container may not be picked up until material is removed, which can delay the project and create extra cost.

When asking for a quote, estimate the material separately from the physical volume. “A driveway tear-out” is more useful than “a lot of debris.”

SIZE QUESTIONS

Dumpster size FAQ

Is a 20-yard dumpster always the best choice?

No. It is versatile, but the best size depends on material, access, volume, and weight. Heavy debris may require a smaller container, while bulky low-density material may need more volume.

What happens if the dumpster is too small?

You may need an additional haul or container. Giving an honest project description before delivery helps reduce this risk.

Can I fill a dumpster to the top?

Material generally must remain at or below the marked fill line and cannot extend above the sides. Weight limits still apply even when the container is not visually full.
